In RetailVista Mobile, we have been using a new barcode scanning engine for some time now. This can best be described as a software component that we source externally. The standard engine that was included for free with RetailVista Mobile offered poor scanning quality and was often perceived as slow by many users on phones. With this new scanning engine, advanced scanning technology is used, resulting in extremely fast barcode recognition.

Even when a phone's camera is merely pointed in the general direction of a barcode, it is often recognized quickly and accurately. Damaged barcodes, folded labels, reflective surfaces, and various other challenging conditions are also consistently handled smoothly and correctly. Unfortunately, the licensing of this barcode technology is not free, and for that reason, we must pass on the cost through a license upgrade.

A major advantage—besides speed—is that this allows you to use inexpensive Android phones as a simple solution on the shop floor for occasional barcode scanning. For bulk tasks (such as stocktaking), you might still consider purchasing a PDA with a built-in barcode scanner instead of relying on a phone camera.
